MAY/JUNE/JULY/AUG/SEPT 2010 SONGS

Suffer- Tegan and Sara (Bad Religion cover)

- Germs of Perfection: a tribute to Bad Religion
Last night, Twitter and Tumblr went crazy. No, police didn’t find coke in the butt of Paris Hilton’s dog Tinkerbell. Tegan and Sara quietly released a cover of Bad Religion’s song “Suffer.”
Why would they cover a Bad Religion song? Well, it’s for a tribute album sponsored by Spin Magazine and Myspace (RIP btw.)
I remember hearing Bad Religion songs in skateboarding video games. I always tended to skip over them or put the Playstation on mute. However, I’d gladly listen to T and S’s rendition while my virtual skater falls on his face while trying to pull off a 720 melon off the rail ollie something.
When you strip away the loudness of Bad Religion, you actually get a complex and interesting song. Imagine that! Thanks, Tee and Ess!

Doubt – The Corin Tucker Band

- Doubt – Single
Corin Tucker is one third of the now defunct Sleater-Kinney. I’ve shared my fondness of them as a whole and individuals a number of times here. Carrie Brownstein is one of my 12 people who can do no wrong, and I shared my Quasi/Janet Weiss experience a few months ago.
But where’s Corin Tucker? I thought she had like two kids or something.
It turns out she does have two kids, but I guess she was in the studio too… because here’s her new single! Corin’s new album is called 1,000 Years and will be released under Kill Rock Stars Oct. 5.

Fuck Was I- Jenny Owen Youngs

Batten the Hatches
This song makes me sway around and want to learn a stringed instrument other than guitar.
Jenny Owen Youngs recently went on the Spring Break Forever tour with Allison Weiss and Bess Rogers. They are basically the three best indiesinger-songwriters out there right now. In other words, I really wanted to go. But I guess Humboldt is not a popular touring location.
Whatevs.

8.24.10 (T&S Tuesday)
Intervention- Margaret Cho feat. Tegan and Sara

- Cho Dependent
If I ever know someone who needs an intervention, I totally want to tell them, “no more hugs till you give up drugs!” a la Margaret Cho.
Cho released her new comedy album “Cho Dependent” today, and it’s so good. She got some of the best names in music to help her on each song. The music sounds like an amazing compilation album and the lyrics are hilarious. I definitely recommend that you buy it.
You can get “Intervention” for free by clicking on this link right now: http://www.amazon.com/gp/dp/ref=pe_71760_16611310_pe_22/B003V23QDC

8.22.10 (Sunday Chill)
Home- Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros

- Up From Below
This is perhaps the ultimate sing-along. Even if you’ve never heard this song before, you’d agree by the time it was halfway through.
“Home, yes I am home. Home is wherever I’m with you!”
It’s just so happy! And it makes me so happy! Happy!

The Only Exception- Paramore

- Brand New Eyes
Today marks the start of the Honda Civic Tour with Paramore, Tegan and Sara, New Found Glory and Kadawatha.
I do moderately like Paramore, especially the powerful unique voice of Hayley Williams. T&S fans flipped out when they heard they’d be supporting Paramore on tour.
Well, T&S fans, maybe you should consider this: you’d probably like most of Paramore’s songs if Tegan and Sara sang them. Just saying. No need to be meanies.

Some Are Lakes- Land of Talk

- Some are Lakes
This song came on in my car, and I got so confused. Who was that woman singing???? Where TF have I heard her voice before? Other than in Land of Talk????
I thought and thought and thought… but I couldn’t figure it out.
This song is so good, though. Partly because of her voice. It’s so unique. That’s how I MUST KNOW IT FROM SOMEWHERE.
Oh, wait. She sometimes sings in Broken Social Scene (along with other females Emily Haines and Leslie Feist.) I solved the mystery!

7.18.10 (Sunday Chill)
Saturday- Electrelane

- No Shouts, No Calls
I don’t have much to comment about in regards to this song. All I want to know is what it means. So cryptic. Ooh.
It’s just so haunting. The piano, the drums, the voice… everything. Which I suppose can mean it’s chill as well. Sunday chill.

Rattled By the Rush- Pavement

Wowee Zowee
So, I was at Sasquatch a monthish ago, and I was so excited to hear Pavement play. But then they did, and they were SO sloppy. Like really bad.
I was sad.
But it’s ok, because I have their albums and I love them. I just ignored the numerous false starts during the performance. NBD. They’re getting old (ha), so I don’t blame them.

Rill Rill- Sleigh Bells

Follow these instructions. Now.
1. Buy Treats by Sleigh Bells.
2. Put it in your car stereo.
3. Roll down your windows.
4. Turn the volume WAYYY up.
5. Thank me.

7.11.10 (Sunday Chill)
Under the Blacklight- Rilo Kiley

- Under the Blacklight
I wasn’t always the biggest fan of Rilo Kiley. Then I realized that it would be silly not to be the biggest fan of Rilo Kiley… cause they’re so uh-mazing! Not to mention, Jenny Lewis is pretty much the coolest person ever.
Soooo… this song is one I often choose when I want to chill. This whole album is good for chilling to, actually. MMbizz says to get on that.

7.9.10 (Classic Friday)
Happiness- Elliott Smith

- Figure 8
The other night, I was driving home from the movie theater. I saw Eclipse, btw. The Twilight books and movies evoke all these crazy emotions from tweenage girls. I walked out of the theater completely unaffected, until I turned on my iPod “night driving” playlist.
This song came on, and I felt just like how the girl in front of me did when Bella punched Jacob (the werewolf)’s face. No one can write songs with as much emotion as Elliott Smith did. I wish I could understand what went on in his mind, but at least this song makes things a little more clear for me. Rest in peace, Elliott.

6.21.10 (All-Play Monday)
Bloodbuzz Ohio- The National

You’ll have to forgive me for posting this so late. I promise I’m not that uncool. I was listening to The National before they even became a group. Duh. #imahipster
The first time I heard this song, the first single off The National’s new album High Violet, I didn’t like it all that much. Then I actually listened to it. And it’s brilliant.
The whole album is brilliant, actually. So……. get on that.

6.18.10 (Friday)
St. Peter’s Day Festival- Ra Ra Riot

- The Rhumb Line
This might be one of the best debut albums OF ALL TIME. Kanye would definitely agree.
The Rhumb Line is from 2008, but I’ve never gotten tired of it. Every song is SO GOOD, YOU GUYS! This particular song is just one great tune out of the entire album. It was so tricky to choose which one to pick. Life and death tricky.
“St. Peter’s Day Festival” doesn’t get quite the same amount of attention as the others, so I went for the underdog. Listen and stuff.

6.17.10 (Grrrl Day Thrrrsday)
Glass Ceiling- Metric

- Live It Out
I have no idea why I haven’t featured a Metric song yet. Ridiculous.
Fantasies just won best alternative album at the Junos, over the likes of Tegan and Sara and others. That means they must be good.
This particular song of Emily Haines and company is from an earlier album, Live It Out. It’s quite fantastic. What a voice. Etc.

6.16.10 (Wednesday)
No Intention- Dirty Projectors

- Bitte Orca
I take back what I wrote the other day. I’m not only sad about missing The xx and Telekinesis, I’m also a bit broken up about not seeing Dirty Projectors at Sasquatch.
I sat through Pavement’s set instead… BIG mistake. They were so sloppy… but anyway…
I absolutely love this album. I mean, it’s so good, you guys! Basically, that’s all you need to know. Because you trust me. Dur.

6.13.10 (Sunday Chill)
Look to the East- Telekinesis

- Telekinesis!
My biggest regret at Sasquatch is not going to The xx and Telekinesis. You probably know The xx, so you understand why I’m sad about them. But Telekinesis is relatively unknown.
He’s a guy. Just a guy… but one lauded by the likes of Carrie Brownstein and other such famous gals as me (of course.) His self titled album is totally brilliant. Totally. You should get it, and then send Carrie Brownstein and I each a thank-you letter.

From You to Me- Allison Weiss

...Was Right All Along
If you haven’t heard of Allison Weiss, you might want to get on that.
She’s friends (and toured with) Jenny Owen Youngs and Bess Rogers. She has really cool hipster glasses. She has impeccable music taste of her own. But most importantly, she makes fantastic music.
This particular song is one of my favorites from her most recent album, …Was Right All Along. Weiss made the record while attending university for a degree in graphic design. Cool, yes? Yes.

5.4.10 (T&S Tuesday)
Never Give Up- Melissa Ferrick

In the Eyes of Strangers
If you asked me what kind of music I like, I’d tell you, “anything BUT country.”
Well, this is kind of country-fied, but it’s totally in a good way. (Ferrick is actually a folk artist. Which is much better than country.) Sure, there are fiddles… but I’ll look past that.
In short, “Never Give Up” makes the fiddle sound good. For that, I salute it.I also like the cat on the album cover…

5.3.10 (DAD DAY Monday)
Southern Point- Grizzly Bear

Veckatimest
Hello Dad. This is kind of a risk, but I’m willing to bet that you’ll appreciate this song. Let me tell you why.
1. You like sort of jazzy stuff, yes? Well, this isn’t jazz, but it is a bit jazzy. And it reminds me of what would happen if Yes and Jean-Luc Ponty had a baby.
2. You will potentially be as blown away by the instrumentation as I was. Seriously, yo. It’s AMAZING.
3. It’s kind of odd. You’re kind of odd. So there.
