2.28.10 (Sunday Chill)
Girl’s Night- First Rate People

Girl's Night
The epitome of chill? Perhaps.
The most appropriate word to describe the first song from Canada’s First Rate People would be “breezy.” That’s what girl’s nights are meant to be I think. Between the gossiping and such.
For a breezy, gossipy girl’s night, press play and listen to this promising new band. They aren’t even signed yet! Wow I’m stepping the indieness up.

Striptease- Hawksley Workman

The Delicious Wolves
Yeah so there are some sexy elements to this song. But moving on, let me tell you about how insanely talented Hawksley Workman is.
He can start from absolutely nothing to having a finished record in TWO WEEKS. That’s right. He writes the material, arranges it, records every instrument himself, and produces the thing in TWO WEEKS!
My mind is obviously blown by this fact.

2.26.10 (Classic Rock Friday)
Tunnel of Love- Bruce Springsteen

Tunnel of Love
He really is the Boss, isn’t he?
Despite my ultimate hatred of the song “Born in the USA,” (the song not the album), I absolutely adore both Tunnel of Love and Nebraska.
This tune is one of my favs from Bruce. Can I call him Brucey? Ok. Something about it makes me want to go in one of those actual tunnels of love from the movies. You know, at carnivals and such?
That’s beside the point, but maybe you’ll also want to go to a carnival now. Too bad it’s February… I suggest going to Australia where it’s warmer. But do they have tunnels of love there? Tell me when you find out.

2.25.10 (Thrrrsday Grrrl Day)
Actor Out Of Work- St. Vincent

Actor
I just featured a St. Vincent song in my GIRL EDITION podcast. Comparing that to this is odd, because the styles seem so different even though they’re both from Actor. However, Annie Clark’s unique vocals and arrangement seem to make the songs oddly similar-sounding.
This EXCELLENT song is just a teaser of what you’ll get with her full album. I endorse it with the MMbizz stamp of approval. I know you need my opinion.

Little Secrets- Passion Pit
-

Manners
I quite enjoy Passion Pit, especially this song.
It’s good. Yep. Pretty much. Mhmm.
So maybe you should listen.
Merci.

Thank You- Dido

No Angel
I remember hearing this song on the radio a lot a few years ago, and honestly, I was sick of it. You might still be sick of it, but I’ve come to terms with the fact that it’s amazing.
The chord progression is quite wonderfully brilliant indeed. I’m listening to it right now and… there’s just nothing to say that isn’t obvious. I only know one other song by Dido (White Flag), but I night have to preview others and find out if they are just as amazing.

1.27.10 (WTF Wednesday)
Blind- Hercules and Love Affair

Hercules and Love Affair
If I was in a trendy dance club in West Hollywood, I wouldn’t be surprised to hear this song. Techno isn’t usually my thing, but I do enjoy getting my musical groove on once in a while.
Something about listening to Hercules and Love Affair makes me feel trendy. Maybe I am trendy and it just doesn’t normally show. Whatever the case, you too can be trendy if you press play. *Dances away from the computer.*

Sweetness Follows- Sara Quin feat. Kaki King

Drive XV
I always really loved the R.E.M song “Sweetness Follows.” Everything about it just resonates with me. Imagine my joy when I heard Sara Quin and Kaki King got together and covered it!
Two of the best musicians today in my opinion, and they do this beautiful song justice. Kaki’s guitar prowess adds texture, while Sara’s unique voice gives it character. They make it their own. You’d be doing yourself a favor by listening.I’m just the messenger.

Fire Away- Jupiter One

Jupiter One
I heard a Jupiter One song in the mall once. I wondered how something could possibly be so catchy… so I listened closely to the lyrics and googled them. I got Jupiter One, huzzah!
This isn’t the particular song I heard, but I find the chorus to be absolutely brilliant. Do you agree with me, or am I under an individual spell? Who knows? No one will comment probably so I certainly won’t know.

Gimme Some Salt- Clap Your Hands Say Yeah

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
I don’t have a whole lot to say about this song, which isn’t really a bad thing. I always start swaying my head when I hear it. That’s something to say about it I suppose.
Very interesting tune indeed. Happy Sunday!

Dance Anthem of the 80′s- Regina Spektor

Far
What a catchy little ditty this is indeed! Regina Spektor is usually study music for me, but songs like this and “Fidelity” for instance make me stop what I’m doing and dance a little.
Study breaks are always good, so I am very appreciative of Spektor’s wonderfully creative song. She is one of the best songwriters of our time, according to me. And I know everything. Duh.

Love vs. Money- The-Dream

Love vs Money
I’ve said this many times before… I generally am not a rap fan. That doesn’t mean I dislike the entire genre. Rap and hip-hop are truly legitimate forms of art. This is evident upon listening to any song of The-Dream’s.
Yep, he’s the guy behind “Umbrella” and “Single Ladies.” And he has an excellent voice. Anyone who’s a rap haterrr should reconsider and take a listen to The-Dream. No one can say he’s not a majorly talented musician.

Arrow (written by Sara) –

Sainthood
I was very concerned when getting ready to listen to Sainthood. No way did I want the Quin twins to mess up… their past albums had been so flawless!
I nervously pressed play, and Arrow started playing. I made the biggest grin ever I think. The sound of this record is so different from The Con but still such a natural progression. Arrow really showcases the differences in both sound and technique. Yep.

1.4.10 (All-Play Monday)
Trouble Hunters- Astronautalis

Pomegranate
I had absolutely no problem picking my all play song of the day. You may know that I’m attending the much anticipated Tegan and Sara concert this week. Well, not only is An Horse opening, but so is Astronautalis.
I’ve said that I like rappish stuff if it’s GOOD. Well, this isn’t really, but I like this song. It’s interesting, cool, and takes the the genre to a level I quite honestly haven’t heard previously.
Woohoo! The end.

1.3.10 (Sunday Chill)
Soft Shock- Yeah Yeah Yeahs

It's Blitz!
Oh what a band. I’ve already done a YYY’s song, so I won’t go into all the semantics of explaining Karen O and such. Everyone knows. Duh.
It’s Blitz! was a real departure for YYY’s, and I think Soft Shock is the Maps of today. I just always find myself mesmerized when listening, and put into a state of chill. On Sundays and other days. Ooh.
I’m also mesmerized by the album cover because it took me so long to figure out what it depicted. But now it’s obvious. Obviously.

You’ve Got the Love -The xx

XX
This song isn’t really from The xx’s album… it’s a cover of Florence + the Machine (one of my favorites! Think upcoming song of the day!)
However, I tend to like their version more than Florence’s… if you listen, you’ll see why. I think it would have fit well in the L Word. Too bad that show’s over. Sort of.

1.1.10 (Classic Rock Friday)
#9 Dream- John Lennon

Walls and Bridges
First, I must start off by saying HAPPY NEW YEAR! It’s 2010 wow! I’m glad Classic Rock Friday falls on New Years, because it’s good to reflect on the past. You know?
My pick is one of my favorites, #9 Dream. John Lennon sounds like of crazy here but in a dreamy and cool way. Sooo yeah.
My resolution is to not miss a single song of the day for the month of January. If I fail, I’ll just edit this part out so I don’t look like a loser.
