NOVEMBER SONGS

12.31.09 (Grrl Day Thursday)

Postcards- An Horse

Rearrange Beds

I can make this count for grrl day because Kate Cooper is the singer and she is a girl… so there!

These two Australians are just groovy cool! In fact, I get to see them open for T&S next week (eeeekkk so excited!!!), so I thought it would be timely to include a song at this particular time. Postcards is probably my favorite song off their album “Rearrange Beds”  but every song is great in my opinion. It was just released in Canada so get it, eh? I promise you’ll be thanking me later.

Womanizer- Britney Spears

Circus

Britney’s back! Rejoice! I remember reading the gossip magazines with Britney and her shaved head on the cover and thinking, “wtf?”

She seems to be more normal now, although this song still fits in the WTF category. But  really, who can deny that Womanizer is one of her catchiest songs ever? I can’t.

To conclude: don’t be a womanizer.

Countdown (Sick For the Big Sun)- Phoenix

Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix

How did Phoenix get so big suddenly? They’ve had three albums already! I guess that’s how it is with most bands, so I shouldn’t be surprised. Not many bands are more deserving of success than Phoenix. Especially with this year’s Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix. It is completely fantastic. “Girlfriend” was one of my songs of the year, in fact. I highly suggest their entire music catalog. Trust me. Teehee.

12.27.09 (Sunday Chill)

Backyard- Guster

Keep It Together

Guster was my favorite band from the age of 13 through most of high school, and for good reason. Wow are they fabulous. I can never decide which song or album is my favorite, because it changes from day to day. This song, however is a consistent top three.

It is just so beautiful… and yes, chill! And I always love the little harmonica solo. As my BFF Paris Hilton says, “Loves it.”

I Hear Noises (written by Tegan)

If It Was You

I’m pretty sure that almost every TnS song is one of my favorites, but this one is probably in my top 10. I know, right?

I Hear Noises is a straight (ha) up pop-rock ditty. It’s oh so catchy and addictive, and I frequently catch myself humming or singing this without being able to help it.

Go ahead… press the play button and let Tegan sing her way into your memory forever muahahaha!

All Apologies- Nirvana

In Utero

Merry Christmas week! Nothing says holiday spirit like Nirvana, eh? I can’t think of a better alternative myself.

I’m at a loss on what to say about this song… it’s an absolute classic. If you don’t know it, you actually do and just don’t know it. I guess “Smells Like Teen Spirit” was more popular but “In Utero” is my favorite Nirvana album so there you go.

Secret Meeting- The National

Alligator

Yeah so this song is pretty chill… you know. The National is a wonderous band and the album Alligator is equally wonderous.

The singer Matt Berninger has a super interesting voice… very deep and baritone-ish. Hmm I’m not sure exactly what to say about this song other than that it’s awesome. Happy Sunday before Christmas! I hope it’s chill yo.

12.19.09 (Sexy Saturday)

Warm Tape- Red Hot Chili Peppers

By the Way

Happy Saturday! I know your day has gotten even better now that you’re listening to the song of the day… it’s a good one!

The RHCP gang’s certainly seen their share of mainstream success (Scar Tissue, Californication, Dani California, etc) but “Warm Tape” went sort of un-noticed.

I lurrrve talking about awesome less-known music (because I’m such an indie hipster obviously). This tune isn’t only awesome, but also sexy. Hence the Sexy Saturday spot. I guess lots of things are sexy though… I just read an article about how newspapers are trying to be sexier. That doesn’t have anything to do with RHCP or “Warm Tape” but hey, I break all the rules.

12.18.09 (Classic Rock Friday)

Blinded by the Light- Manfred Mann’s Earth Band

The Roaring Silence

What made me so interested in this song as a youngin were the lyrics. “Blinded by the light… wrapped up like a douche…?” I had no idea what the lyrics were supposed to be. I didn’t have Google to help me. I sang completely ridiculous lyrics thinking I had it all figured out. (Actually it goes “revved up like a deuce…”).

Other than the funny lyrics, I just enjoy this tune immensely. Bruce Springsteen’s original version too. That’s my story and I’ll probably stick to it.

12.17.09 (Grrrl Day Thrrrsday)

Y Control- Yeah Yeah Yeahs

Fever to Tell

I don’t think the YYY’s can do any wrong. This song is from their 2003 release “Fever to Tell,” their fantastic debut album. It’s so interesting to see how the group has progressed between each album. In a matter of six years, they went from the guitar-riffing rock you hear here to almost techno in this year’s “It’s Blitz!”.

Karen O is one of the biggest talents in music I think. No only are her vocals unique and wonderful, but her stage presence is unbelievable. I hope I can see them live sometime… it would be awes poss.

Get By- Talib Kweli

Quality

Rap is kind of a love/hate thing for me. I’m not a fan of the majority of rap music because it’s mostly a guy talking with a generic beat in the background.

However, I’m a big fan of GOOD rap music, and this song is one of my favorites. The beat is fresh (I can’t believe I said that) and just really original. When I hear “Get By,” I actually hear music. The lyrics are also great and meaningful. This is one rap song I love, and you might too.

Feel It In My Bones- Tiesto feat. Tegan and Sara Quin

Kaleidoscope

This isn’t technically TnS, but they wrote and sang the song for Tiesto. It basically counts!

Sara gets all techno in the verse and chorus, and it’s surprisingly fitting for her voice. Maybe Sara should consider doing an electric side project (like Ben Gibbard).

The awesome part comes in the second half of the song. Before, Tegan had just been chilling doing backup vocals, when suddenly an incredible bridge/breakdown thing starts and she goes crazy awesome! That sounded a little fan-girl… sorry. But every time I hear that part, I just want to start dancing. Because that’s what Tiesto’s all about… dancing. The end.

We Intertwined- The Hush Sound

Like Vines

I was going to do a Hush Sound song on grrl day because of Greta Salpeter’s vocals, but today works too. This song features the voice of the other singer, Bob Morris.

“We Intertwined” is just such a cute little ditty. The lyrics are clever and the keyboard gives the instrumentals such a light tonality. Warning: just don’t read too far into the lyrics, or the song won’t seem as happy anymore. Anyway, what better way to start off the week than a fun song like this? Thank you, The Hush Sound!

12.13.09 (Sunday Chill)

Tranquilize- The Killers (feat. Lou Reed)

Sawdust

I’m completely mesmerized by this song. Maybe that’s why I’m including it in the Sunday Chill category… it renders me entranced.

I lurrrve the bass so much. Brandon Flowers’ voice also is wonderful. The higher registered instruments (guitar, piano) manage to maintain importance while letting the rhythm instruments drive the song. <–That didn’t make much sense. Oh well.

I don’t want to be too verbose, but just know that you should listen if you’ve never heard Tranquilize before. I have a feeling that you’ll love it.

12.12.09 (Sexy Saturday)

Tired of Sex- Weezer

Pinkerton

I had to do this song for Sexy Saturday… just look at the title. This is sort of the anti-sex song though. When I think of Rivers Cuomo, I don’t think of sex. However, I still find it sexy. I can’t explain it, but hey I’m always right so no explanations are needed. Obviously. On a T&S note, they covered this tune and performed with Matt Sharp himself last year. Linkage? Oui oui she.

To recap. Un-sexy yet very sexy song. There you have it folks.

Take the Money and Run- Steve Miller Band

Fly Like an Eagle

If I ever did karaoke, this song would be in my repertoire. First, it’s an excellent song, but also I wouldn’t have to read the lyrics off the screen. Sure, the words don’t have metaphorical meaning, but they’re fun! Did you know that Billy Mack is a detective down in Texas? And you can bet he knows exactly what the facts…is.

Not much to say, because you probably know this song. Steve Miller Band is one of my favorite older groups, so expect some Jungle Love, Swingtown, or even Wild Mountain Honey in weeks to come. I’m such a tease… teehee. So later alligators!

Daisies- Sick of Sarah

Sick of Sarah

These gals are quite popular with the Tegan and Sara scenesters… they’ve done Holland cruises and everything. I’m not surprised, because they make great music! This song is one of their poppier ones, but it’s super catchy and accessible. I’ve been hearing talk of a new album… someone will have to tell me if that’s correct.

If you have time, I suggest checking out their Youtube page. They’re all so sweet and funny! I think their next album’s going to be big… mark my words.

Life Being What It Is- Kaki King

Dreaming of Revenge

Before you is a song by my favorite guitarist… Kaki King! Her style is very unique because her background is as a percussionist (like me… ya boiii). This song doesn’t display her very interesting slapping and fret tapping style, but I had to pick this one because it’s possibly my favorite KK song.

One may know her from collaborating with Tegan and Sara. She played the lap steel for Knife Going In and guitar for Floorplan. But I promise that I don’t like her just because of that. It helps though.

I can’t really describe the beautiful music she plays, so here are a few links. Play the song, click the links, and be wowed.

12.2.09 (WTF Wednesday)

Southtown- P.O.D.

The Fundamental Elements of Southtown

Ook so I’m quite a fan of P.O.D. (Christian metal… what?) I used to be a member of one of those music clubs where you get 10 free CDs but then you have to decline other offers for like two years or else you get sent a random album and have to pay for it.

I neglected to decline my CD of the month once and got sent the P.O.D. greatest hits album. I was kind of mad because I had to pay almost $20, but I was also happy because I like the album a lot. This song is one of my favorites.

I used this for WTF Wednesday because I generally don’t like lyrics that are all talky. However, something about this is catchier than similar music in the genre.

12.1.09 (Tegan & Sara Tuesday)

Sheets- written by Sara

Sainthood

Sheets is a new Sara song woohoo! A b-side from Sainthood to be exact. I lurrve it quite a bit. There are a couple iffy spots for me (the heart attack line is repeated a couple too many times for me) but the good spots outweigh the bad by far.

The strings sound really great with Sara’s vocals. Oh and I also really love the way she sings the “I promise I won’t linger long” and “your stupid sheets.” It sounds… like a warm knife through butter. Or magarine because that’s even softer.
