11.21.09 (Sexy Saturday)
Dreamgirl- Dave Matthews Band

- Stand Up
“As I watched you asleep face down on the grass in the park in the middle of a hot afternoon. Your top was untied and I thought how nice it would be to follow the sweat down your spine. You’re like my best friend and after a good good drink, you and me would wake and make love after a deep sleep”
It’s just that when I listen to him sing these lyrics, the imagery of the scene plays out in my head. And what I see is pretty sexy I guess. So ya bois and grrls. That’s that and this is this.

Lorelei- Styx

Equinox
You probably know what I’m going to say, because I tend to say the same thing for most songs of the day. I’ll say it anyway though… Styx is one of my favorite bands, and Lorelei is one of my favorite songs. Shocking, I know!
Styx was probably the first classic rock band I got into, because I liked playing drums along with the greatest hits CD. This song is especially awesome because it was also one of the first songs I learned guitar for. I do immensely enjoy singing it also, but I can’t right now because I’m still deaf from my ear issues. Blehhh.

Fast as You Can- Fiona Apple

When the Pawn...
Dear Fiona Apple, you are my hero. Sincerely, MMbizz.
That would be my letter to her. She is the mistress of the piano and all things musical. Modernly speaking, Fiona Apple writes the most complex and beautiful songs I’ve ever heard in my life. This particular song exemplifies Apple’s knowledge of music theory. Just listen to the piano weave between the other instruments and you’ll understand. I may seem weird saying this, but her music has certainly gave my life meaning, leading me to assert that there is no one above her. (Well there might be, but not in my opinion.) She is the epitome of brilliance. The end.

Nobody’s Fool- Avril Lavigne

Let Go
This was totally my middle school anthem! Avril brings back many fond memories actually so today I listened to my entire 30 song catalog of her. Dang she’s a good songwriter! For realzies!
This is my WTF song of the day because I think if I was to say I’m a fan of Ex-Mrs. Whibley, I’d get mocked quite a lot. But have y’allz listened to her songs? They’re good!
I chose this song not because it’s the most well written (which it’s definitely not… I think Mobile is) but because I remember my cousin and I choreographed a skit to this song. We started to perform it for my aunt, but I got too nervous and ran away before my part. I don’t know why, but that was just a memorable event for me… so yeah listen if you feel so inclined.
-mmbizz
By the way, my cousin’s part was the singing one and mine was the speaking/rapping one (just so you can get a visual).

11.17.09 (T&S Tuesday)
Living Room (written by Tegan)

If It Was You
So pretty much this might top my list of favorite Teegles and Sasa songs… I know right?
I was deciding what song to do this week. Should I do a new one from Sainthood? Hmm no because I can’t find the MP3 files online to embed on this page. I was going to wait before unleashing Living Room, but I just couldn’t control myself. I lovvvve the lyrics. And the music. And everything about this song.
I guess it’s kind of odd that this is potentially my favorite because it isn’t a typical T&S song. It’s a little bit…. country? But it’s just so good. So good. So jealous. If I was you under feet like yours, I’d stop conning myself and listen. Oui? D’accord.
-mmbizz
PS: I LOVE THIS SONG SO MUCH THAT NO WORDS COULD PROPERLY EXPRESS IT! …kbye…

11.16.09 (All-Play Monday)
One Angry Dwarf and 200 Solemn Faces- Ben Folds Five

Whatever And Ever Amen
It’s challenging to pick a song for All-Play Monday since it’s the only day without a real theme. I feel like I can’t do a song that fits any of the other themes… so basically Monday is “no females, no classic rock, and not chill, sexy, or WTFable” day.
This Ben Folds song fits that description perfectly, and is one of my favorite songs everz! So naturally it’s the song of the day. The piano is excellent and the lyrics are quite clever. I always love singing along, especially for the multiple “kiss my ass” lines. One time I even got my keyboard out and pretended to play along. I’m sure you’ll want to do the same when you hear it.

THIS is a really cool video of Ben Folds playing this song with the Sydney Symphony

11.15.09 (Sunday Chill)
Sweet Song- Blur
The title of this song couldn’t be more appropriate. It is truly a sweet song. When I think of chilling on a Sunday, this song pops into my head immediately. I just love it, especially the intro before Damon Albarn starts singing.
Every time I hear Sweet Song, which is admittedly all the time, I’m reminded of a couple slow dancing or something. It’s the kind of song that one attaches a memory to. If I ever go in the film business, my movie will definitely have this song in it for a heartwarming scene.
Press play and prepare for your heart to break… in a good way of course!
-mmbizz
Original Demo of Sweet Song <– I much prefer the studio version, but this is interesting to hear how different the feel of the song is without the piano.

11.14.09 (Sexy Saturday)
Boy With A Coin- Iron & Wine

The Shepherd's Dog
There are so many sexy songs in this world, so it was really difficult to pick just one. Last Saturday I didn’t have this theme, so I should probably explain exactly what I mean when I say a song is sexy… well maybe it’s obvious but I’ll explain anyway.
Sexy songs are songs that remind me of love, passion, and… um.. sex. For instance, this song of the week is a great example (which is why I picked it). If Boy With a Coin doesn’t remind you of a sex scene, then you are actually crazy. I don’t even have to say why… all you have to do is listen. OR maybe I’m the crazy one… is this song sexy? You tell me. I don’t want to screw (hah) up every Sexy Saturday.

11.13.09 (Classic Rock Friday)
Out On The Tiles- Led Zeppelin

Out on the Tiles is from my favorite Led Zeppelin album (III). It’s definitely not one of the more famous songs, but in my opinion it’s one of the best. Sure it’s not Kashmir, but I do enjoy singing along loudly, and that counts for something, right?
Actually on my blog, that counts for everything. Teehee. But for realz, Led Zeppelin never put out anything bad. Am I right, or am I right? “ALL I NEED FROM YOUUU IS ALL YOUR LOVE! ALL YOU GOT TO GIVE TO ME IS ALL YOUR LOOOOVEEE!!! OOH YEAH OOOOOOHHHH YEAH” (That’s me singing along. Now you really want to listen, eh?)

11.12.09 (Thrrrsday Grrrl Day)
Saturday- Rachael Cantu

Run All Night
Grrrl Day is my favorite, because there are so many great female artists. I picked Rachael Cantu not only because I totally love her, but also because her new self-released album Far and Wide comes out next Tuesday. I’ve heard a few of the new songs and I can ensure you that buying the album would NOT be a mistake.
Saturday is my favorite RaCa song from her 2006 release Run All Night (no not just because Tegan Quin does backup vocals…). It’s just really really good. I wouldn’t tell a lie.

11.11.09 (Wild-Card/WTF Wednesday)
Wadsyaname- Nelly

Brass Knuckles
This tune certainly stands apart from my normal alternative rock lovefest on here. Nelly is probably my favorite rapper guy. The songs are very catchy. I don’t have much to say about this particular one, because I can’t really analyze the musical elements of rap without sounding even whiter than I already do. The part of this song that won me over is when the girl says “Who currrs?” because I can sing along. So yepperoo that’s my wild-card song of the day.

11.10.09 (Tegan & Sara Tuesday)
Not Tonight (written by Sara)
Downtown (written by Sara)

If It Was You

So Jealous
For this particular T&S Tuesday, I knew I wanted to do a Sara song… more specifically a slow song. I couldn’t decide between these two, so I’m just doing both. Double the musical fun!
Both of these songs show how versatile a writer Sara is. She usually writes complicated and sort of odd instrumentations complete with lap steels or synth. In both these cases however, she abandons her usual style and delivers simple yet beautiful results. The chord progressions aren’t difficult in the least, but they still sound so full. They really exemplify the idea that you don’t need to overthink a song to make it good. Sometimes simplicity is key. You are required to approve of these songs, because they’re two of my all-time favorites. But if you don’t, I suppose it’s ok. Just never bring it up. For real.

11.9.09 (All-Play Monday)
We Will Become Silhouettes- The Shins

Such Great Heights- EP
The Shins covering the Postal Service? Interesting… and completely wonderful. This could easily be a Sunday Chill song. It just makes me want to play hopscotch or skip around in a park on a sunny day. James Mercer’s voice is so pure, and that mixed with upbeat instrumentation makes this song a perfect Monday pick-me-up.
I like this song much better than the Postal Service version (although I also love them! Don’t get me wrong). It seems to have been written for The Shins. Take a listen, but make sure you have time to frolic in a meadow afterward.

Blood Red Moon- the xx
XX (although Blood Red Moon is not on this album)
I was on iTunes the other day looking through the “iTunes Essentials” lists. I looked at the Sunday Morning Chill Out list and saw a song by The XX, which reminded me to make this the featured song for Sunday. No other song is more appropriate. Sunday is the day of rest (and study for college students). If you want to be able to focus on homework or just completely zone out, this UK band is for you…. and I mean that in a totally complimentary way! The vocals are haunting and the subtle electronic beats swirl in one’s head. Blood Red Moon isn’t on their full length release, but you can find it on their Myspace Page.

11.7.09
The Fox- Sleater-Kinney

The Woods
I know, I know, I know. This is a very stereotypical band for me to like. And if you do know that, then you most likely recognized my first sentence as a Tegan and Sara song. Anyway…
I love this song. Carrie Brownstein is such a talented guitarist. Corin Tucker’s vocals are amazing. Janet Weiss (not of Rocky Horror fame) is a brilliant drummer. Put the three together, and you get this eargasmic musical experience. As the first track on The Woods, it really sets the tone for the entire record. Rarely does an album start off so well.

11..6.09 (Classic Rock Friday)
Starship Trooper- Yes

The Yes Album
Yes is so amazing! I’m not even editorializing because it’s obviously true. They bring such a beautiful complexity to every song.
One interesting thing about Yes, which was certainly not uncommon among their peers, is the length of their songs. Starship Trooper runs over 9 minutes. Imagine listening to a 9 minute Miley Cyrus song… actually maybe you shouldn’t. It would just be bad. Yes has the ability to keep my attention for a full 9 minutes and leave me wishing the song was even longer.
The song weaves through three different parts (or movements). Each could stand as a song on their own, yet are still able to merge together flawlessly. By the last 2 minutes, the tension has built up to create an amazing crescendo. I can’t explain it. Just listen. Really. Now.
