The Grammys reaffirms its love for sucky music: MMbizz’s 2011 Grammy Predictions
The Grammy nominations were revealed tonight, and as usual, my Twitter feed and I were completely horrified. The good thing about such weak noms is that the winners should be easy to predict. My predictions are in bold. *What I actually want to win is asterisked.*
Song Of The Year:
Ray Montagne- Beg Steal Or Borrow
Cee Lo Green- Forget You*
Miranda Lambert- House That Built Me
Eminem Feat. Rihanna- Love The Way You Lie
Lady Antebellum- Need You Now
Cee Lo Green- Forget You*
Miranda Lambert- House That Built Me
Eminem Feat. Rihanna- Love The Way You Lie
Lady Antebellum- Need You Now
- Anything but Lady Antebellum. Seriously. That song is the worst song ever and I wish it didn’t exist. If it wins song of the year, I’ll be forced to move to Canada where at least they have the Polaris Prize and no Lady Antebellum. #ohcanada
Best New Artist:
Justin Bieber
Drake
Florence & The Machine*
Mumford & Suns
Esperanza Spalding
Drake
Florence & The Machine*
Mumford & Suns
Esperanza Spalding
- Everyone is pretty much in love with the Biebs. Girls around the country are going to flip out if he loses, and Academy members don’t want to piss off their daughters. That said, Florence + The Machine is far more deserving based on last year’s flawless debut, Lungs. It stands the best chance against Bieber.
Album Of The Year:
Arcade Fire- The Suburbs*
Eminem- Recovery
Lady Antebellum- Need You Now
Lady GaGa- The Fame Monster
Katy Perry- Teenage Dream
Eminem- Recovery
Lady Antebellum- Need You Now
Lady GaGa- The Fame Monster
Katy Perry- Teenage Dream
- NOT Lady Antebellum. Arcade Fire would be great, but alternative rock isn’t even in the Grammy dictionary. And Katy Perry??? That has to be a joke. Just… no. Gaga was snubbed last year, so it’s possible that she’ll win this time around. However, I have the feeling this is Em’s year to actually win. Recovery is the best he’s done in a long time.
Record of The Year:
B.O.B. Feat Bruno Mars- Nothin’ On You
Eminem Feat. Rihanna- Love The Way You Lie
Cee Lo Green- Forget You
Jay Z & Alicia Keys- Empire State Of Mind*
Lady Antebellum- Need You Now
Eminem Feat. Rihanna- Love The Way You Lie
Cee Lo Green- Forget You
Jay Z & Alicia Keys- Empire State Of Mind*
Lady Antebellum- Need You Now
-
This one was difficult… at least I ruled out Lady Antebellum. Record of the year tends to be the most popular song of the year, and it’s hard to tell which of these was most popular. However, Love the Way You Lie is a few months newer than Empire State of Mind, and more likely to stick in peoples’ minds. It’s hard to discount the great production of Fuck You though… hmm…
Best Female Pop Vocal Performance
KING OF ANYTHING – Sara Bareilles
HALO (LIVE) – Beyoncé
CHASING PIRATES – Norah Jones
BAD ROMANCE – Lady Gaga*
TEENAGE DREAM – Katy Perry
HALO (LIVE) – Beyoncé
CHASING PIRATES – Norah Jones
BAD ROMANCE – Lady Gaga*
TEENAGE DREAM – Katy Perry
-
Gaga is brilliant in this song, and not many people can disagree with that. Beyonce’s the nearest contender, and she might actually deserve it too. She hits unbelievable notes in Halo. The others aren’t nearly as impressive from a vocal standpoint… and that’s what the category’s all about, oui?
Best Male Pop Vocal Performance
HAVEN’T MET YOU YET – Michael Bublé
THIS IS IT – Michael Jackson
WHATAYA WANT FROM ME – Adam Lambert*
JUST THE WAY YOU ARE – Bruno Mars
HALF OF MY HEART – John Mayer
THIS IS IT – Michael Jackson
WHATAYA WANT FROM ME – Adam Lambert*
JUST THE WAY YOU ARE – Bruno Mars
HALF OF MY HEART – John Mayer
-
Awards shows love posthumous nominees. Just the name Michael Jackson will probably boost the ratings…. and it would also make a nice tribute. I do enjoy Glambert’s song though.
Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals
DON’T STOP BELIEVIN’ (REGIONALS VERSION) – Glee Cast
MISERY – Maroon 5
THE ONLY EXCEPTION – Paramore*
BABYFATHER – Sade
HEY, SOUL SISTER (LIVE) – Train
MISERY – Maroon 5
THE ONLY EXCEPTION – Paramore*
BABYFATHER – Sade
HEY, SOUL SISTER (LIVE) – Train
-
People love that stupid Train song. It’s in almost every TV commercial at this point, so people like me are screwed if they hate it. It’ll probably win just because I hate it. If it doesn’t, Glee will (but I like Glee, so Train will win for sure.)
Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals
AIRPLANES, PART II – B.o.B, Eminem & Hayley Williams
IMAGINE – Herbie Hancock, Pink, India.Arie, Seal, Konono No 1, Jeff Beck & Oumou Sangare
IF IT WASN’T FOR BAD – Elton John & Leon Russell
TELEPHONE – Lady Gaga & Beyoncé
CALIFORNIA GURLS – Katy Perry & Snoop Dogg
IMAGINE – Herbie Hancock, Pink, India.Arie, Seal, Konono No 1, Jeff Beck & Oumou Sangare
IF IT WASN’T FOR BAD – Elton John & Leon Russell
TELEPHONE – Lady Gaga & Beyoncé
CALIFORNIA GURLS – Katy Perry & Snoop Dogg
- Too close to call! I want them all to win.
Best Pop Vocal Album
MY WORLD 2.0 – Justin Bieber
I DREAMED A DREAM – Susan Boyle
THE FAME MONSTER – Lady Gaga*
BATTLE STUDIES – John Mayer
TEENAGE DREAM – Katy Perry
I DREAMED A DREAM – Susan Boyle
THE FAME MONSTER – Lady Gaga*
BATTLE STUDIES – John Mayer
TEENAGE DREAM – Katy Perry
-
Gaga will win unless Bieber loses best new artist, in which case he’ll win this category. Obviously. Duh. I mean, come on. Right?
Best Dance Recording
ROCKET – Goldfrapp
IN FOR THE KILL – La Roux
DANCE IN THE DARK – Lady Gaga
ONLY GIRL (IN THE WORLD) – Rihanna
DANCING ON MY OWN – Robyn*
IN FOR THE KILL – La Roux
DANCE IN THE DARK – Lady Gaga
ONLY GIRL (IN THE WORLD) – Rihanna
DANCING ON MY OWN – Robyn*
- The Grammys really likes Ri-Ri. It doesn’t hurt that it’s a pretty good dance recording. I’m sure Robyn will sadly be overlooked, even though Body Talk was epic and amazing and all that.
Best Electronic/Dance Album
THESE HOPEFUL MACHINES – BT
FURTHER – The Chemical Brothers
HEAD FIRST – Goldfrapp
BLACK LIGHT – Groove Armada
LA ROUX – La Roux*
FURTHER – The Chemical Brothers
HEAD FIRST – Goldfrapp
BLACK LIGHT – Groove Armada
LA ROUX – La Roux*
- The Grammys suck, but hopefully not enough to forget how amazing La Roux’s album was. It was the best, so it should win. BUT… The Chemical Brothers are way more established obviously and might pull an upset.
Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals
READY TO START – Arcade Fire*
I PUT A SPELL ON YOU – Jeff Beck & Joss Stone
TIGHTEN UP – The Black Keys
RADIOACTIVE – Kings Of Leon
RESISTANCE – Muse
I PUT A SPELL ON YOU – Jeff Beck & Joss Stone
TIGHTEN UP – The Black Keys
RADIOACTIVE – Kings Of Leon
RESISTANCE – Muse
- Muse wins everything at every awards shows’ rock/alternative categories. Why would this be any different?
Best Rock Song
ANGRY WORLD – Neil Young, songwriter (Neil Young)
LITTLE LION MAN – Ted Dwane, Ben Lovett, Marcus Mumford & Country Winston, songwriters (Mumford & Sons)*
RADIOACTIVE – Caleb Followill, Jared Followill, Matthew Followill & Nathan Followill, songwriters (Kings Of Leon)
RESISTANCE – Matthew Bellamy, songwriter (Muse)
TIGHTEN UP – Dan Auerbach & Patrick Carney, songwriters (The Black Keys)
LITTLE LION MAN – Ted Dwane, Ben Lovett, Marcus Mumford & Country Winston, songwriters (Mumford & Sons)*
RADIOACTIVE – Caleb Followill, Jared Followill, Matthew Followill & Nathan Followill, songwriters (Kings Of Leon)
RESISTANCE – Matthew Bellamy, songwriter (Muse)
TIGHTEN UP – Dan Auerbach & Patrick Carney, songwriters (The Black Keys)
- The Black Keys can’t go unrecognized for this song. It would be a crime. But – it would be awesome if Mumford and Sons won it… and judging by the song’s recent popularity, they might.
Best Alternative Music Album
THE SUBURBS – Arcade Fire
INFINITE ARMS – Band Of Horses
BROTHERS – The Black Keys
BROKEN BELLS – Broken Bells
CONTRA – Vampire Weekend
INFINITE ARMS – Band Of Horses
BROTHERS – The Black Keys
BROKEN BELLS – Broken Bells
CONTRA – Vampire Weekend
- I wish this was the list for album of the year. How is Lady Antebellum better than any albums on this list??? I don’t get it. Arcade Fire will win, though. I can’t pick a favorite, though. Maybe Vampire Weekend… but they’re all good.
Best Rap Album
THE ADVENTURES OF BOBBY RAY – B.o.B
THANK ME LATER – Drake
RECOVERY – Eminem
THE BLUEPRINT 3 – Jay-Z
HOW I GOT OVER – The Roots*
THANK ME LATER – Drake
RECOVERY – Eminem
THE BLUEPRINT 3 – Jay-Z
HOW I GOT OVER – The Roots*
- Eminem will obviously win, but the rest of the nominees can’t be overlooked! Especially The Roots’ How I Got Over. Drake’s was good too… well… so was B.o.B’s… and Jay-z’s. This is so hard, you guys! #twss
Final thoughts: why is Lady Antebellum nominated for so many things? Why is Teenage Dream in the running for best album?
