SASQUATCH 2010- Pre Show Analysis

I hail from the great state of Washington… home of forest, desert, Grand Coulee Dam, apples, Seattle and Sasquatch Music Festival. Last month I read the confirmed Sasquatch lineup with much excitement. With help from fellow bloggers and blogettes, I actually know every band performing! AND there’s not a bad one in the bunch!
I’m really happy for myself, but with knowledge comes responsibility. I want to share my knowledge of these wonderful bands with the world at large. What better way to do that than with my extremely popular and mildly successful blog?
Here are some of my favorite groups showcasing the festival. Let’s analyze chronologically, shall we?

DAY ONE- Saturday May 29, 2010

THE NATIONAL

Song: Friend of Mine Album: Alligator (2005)

This Brooklyn band is one of my favorites. Alligator is a top album for me, though Boxer proved to be more popular. Their fifth studio album is set to release about a week before Sasquatch… plenty of time for you to acquaint yourself with it before seeing them play it live.

WATCH them play “Secret Meeting” live

VAMPIRE WEEKEND

Song: Cousins Album: Contra (2010)

Don’t hate on them because they’re educated… I mean, who doesn’t want to hear a song about oxford commas? But really. No one can deny that Vampire Weekend is original. It’s refreshing to listen to them, and I heard they’re great live. Melissa approves.

WATCH Vampire Weekend do “A-Punk” on QTV

BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE

Song: 7/4 (Shoreline) Album: Broken Social Scene (2005)

I think Broken Social Scene wins for most group members. Last I counted it was 19. For realz. It’s like a Canadian indie rock party. They’ve got one or more people from Metric, Stars, Land of Talk, and Valley of the Giants. All in one band. Umm… amazing. How will anyone be able to focus when seeing all those people on stage at once? I’ll have to figure it out.

WATCH Broken Social Scene play “Swimmers” live!

THE MIDDLE EAST

Song: Beleriand Album: The Recordings of the Middle East (2008)

The music this Australian band makes is so pretty! They broke up after releasing their first and only album in 2008, but reconvened last year. That made me happy indeed. Almost as exciting is that they’re gracing George, WA with their presence.

WATCH The Middle East play “Blood” live!

OK GO

Song: This Too Shall Pass (Passion Pit Remix) Album: Of the Blue Colour of the Sky (2010)

I’m sure you know the treadmill video from Youtube. The one where Ok Go does “Here It Goes Again?” Yep. I liked the song alright, but I thought it was gimmicky. This new album proves that they are truly a great band, and I’m excited to see them sans-treadmills in May.

WATCH Ok Go play “Shooting the Moon” live!

DAY TWO- Sunday May 30, 2010

TEGAN AND SARA

Song: On Directing Album: Sainthood (2009)

I really like this band… in case you didn’t know. I don’t know what to write. I’m speechless. So. Happy. That. They’ll. Be. At. Sasquatch.

WATCH Tegan and Sara play “Night Watch” live via @wojo4hitz

THE XX

Song: Islands Album: XX (2009)

This sounds corny, but I think it’s sort of clever. The xx are both simply amazing and amazingly simple. These Londoners released their debut album just last year to much hype, and really came through. If you’ve read any Best of 2009 music lists, there’s a good chance The xx is on them. This is another band I’m extremely excited to see translate their material to a live setting.

WATCH The xx play “Basic Space” live!

CITY AND COLOUR

Song: Body in a Box Album: Bring Me Your Love (2008)

City and Colour is basically Dallas Green. Get it? Dallas=city and Green-colour. Yeah I figured that you got it. Green won multiple Junos (Canadian Grammy Awards) in 2007 and 2009 for his amazing singing/songwriting capabilities. Oh yeah, he sings for Alexisonfire too! Ch-check him out.

WATCH City and Colour play “The Girl” live!

FREELANCE WHALES

Song: Starring Album: Weathervanes (2009)

This New York band sort of popped out of nowhere, but I’m glad they did! I think Weathervanes is one of the best albums of 2009 for sure. I love their sound, and every song is so interesting. I shall enjoy watching them. That much is true.

WATCH Freelance Whales play “Hannah” live!

NADA SURF

Song: Whose Authority Album: Lucky (2008)

Nada Surf gets better with each record. I didn’t like The Weight is a Gift very much besides “Always Love,” but Lucky is great. It will be fun to see them play live. I like Daniel Lorca’s dreads.

WATCH Nada Surf play “Always Love” live

DAY THREE- Monday May 31, 2010

THE NEW PORNOGRAPHERS

Song: Twin Cinema Album: Twin Cinema (2005)

Another one of my absolute favorites! And another supergroup! Neko Case, John Collins, and A.C. Newman in one band = wonderful Canadian indie rock… those Canadians like to stick together. I haven’t seen them live, but I watched a recorded performance on a TV special. That sort of counts I think! I felt like I was standing in the front row as I sang along with them. If they have that effect from TV, I can only imagine what it will be like live.

WATCH The New Pornographers play “Myriad Harbour” Live!

PASSION PIT

Song: Little Secrets Album: Manners (2009)

I actually don’t know a lot about this band other than I really love their album Manners. I can guess that their live performance will be super high-energy and wonderful. At least it better be.

WATCH Passion Pit play “Sleepyhead” live!

QUASI

Song: The Rhino Album: When the Going Gets Dark (2006)

Again, I don’t know everything about Portland band Quasi. What I do know is that Janet Weiss is the drummer. No, not the character from  Rocky Horror Picture Show. She was in Sleater-Kinney! Weiss is one of the best drummers out there, and it’s even cooler that she’s a woman. The drumming is just as excellent in Quasi, so they’re definitely worth checking out. I’m actually seeing them next week at a free show. I’ll report back to you.

WATCH Quasi play “Repulsion” live!

BAND OF HORSES

Song: Our Swords Album: Everything All the Time (2006)

Hey I like Band of Horses too! Both Everything All the Time and Cease to Begin are excellent (and markedly different). Along with growing cool beards, they make good music. I approve. Yep.

WATCH Band of Horses play “The Funeral” live

MGMT

Song: Electric Feel Album: Oracular Spectacular (2007)

By Sasquatch time, MGMT’s new album, Congratulations, will have been out for a month or so. I hope it’s as good as Oracular Spectacular, because that was pretty darn good. Although I’m a little tired of hearing it. Seriously, MGMT’s everywhere. New material will be nice.

WATCH MGMT play “Kids” live!

CAMERA OBSCURA

Song: Suspended From Class Album: Underachievers Please Try Harder (2004)

Rounding out the lineup is this Scottish band… another good one! Their newest album .My Maudlin Career, showed that they’ve still got it after four records since 2001. That’s all I’ll say because I’m running out of steam here…

WATCH Camera Obscura play “French Navy” live!

THE END.

That took me a longer time that I anticipated. But now you know a little background info on all my favorite groups set to play Sasquatch. Hopefully. At least you know two songs by each of them. Phew.

  10. Good afternoon. I wanted to write you a quick comment to express my thanks. I’ve been reading your blog for a month or so and have picked up a great deal of good information as well as enjoyed the way you’ve setup your blog. I am attempting to run my own blog but I think it’s far too general. I would like to focus more on narrower topics. Being all things to all people is not all that its cracked up to be. Many thanks.
