4 (Four, Quatre, 四) Favorite Fads of 2009

Fads are fads for a reason… they don’t last. Most of the time, it’s a good thing. However, looking back at this past year, I realized that I’ve grown rather fond of some fads. Sure, they might be lame, but lame’s never been so… snuggly.

The Snuggie

Not to be mistaken for the Slanket, the Snuggie is a blanket… with arms. How genius is that? You’ve seen the hilarious commercials and probably even the parodies on Youtube. People laugh and make fun of it, but do they know how warm it is? I’m not talking about the regular Snuggie. No, you have to splurge for the extra warm Snuggie. Sure, you could just use a blanket and look normal, but how else are you going get made fun of and embarass the people around you? I for one have two Snuggies (for the price of one!)

Twitter

I knew about Twitter in 2008, but it really is a phenomenon of 2009. Twitter and I have a complicated history. At first, I thought it was the dumbest thing ever. What can be said in 140 characters or less? Well, it turns out, one can say a lot. I follow all my favorite celebrities without creepy stalker guilt, and I can post statuses that won’t get me Facebook hate (because really, who cares what my Facebook status is? I hope no one, because I don’t care about theirs). I’ve come to realize the wonders of Tweeting and Twatting and all that, and hope to never have a bad relationship with Twitter again. My main problem now is the effects Twitter has on peoples’ usage of proper grammar and spelling, but that’s for another post.

Plaid

Walking around my campus is like walking around a lumberjack party… and I love it. I don’t know when plaid got popular again, but it certainly is. I always felt like I’d be mocked if I wore my favorite plaid jacket in public, but now I get complimented. I think plaid makes a person automatically ten times more attractive. (Natural attractiveness(A) x amount of plaid(P)^2 = <3). Maybe the plaid is just a West Coast thing. Someone will have to fill me in before I tote all my flannels to some other part of the country. Long live plaid!!!

Hand Sanitizer

I read that sales for hand sanitizer went way up this year… probably because of the H1N1 virus. The swine flu part isn’t so good, but I love hand sanitizer! That may be kind of weird actually. Hmm oh well. Anyway, it smells so good and it makes everything so fresh and clean. So, I hope people continue to sanitize their hands in 2010.

What do you think of my choices? Are they rightfully fads, or do they deserve to be societal mainstays?
