5 (Five, Cinq, 五) Favorite Books of 2009!

It’s tricky deciding what lists to make. This one is a no-brainer though. Here is a list of my recommended books of 2009. Please note that none of them were actually published in 2009… ha.
MMbizz’s Reading Recommendations! In no particular order!
Hey Nostradamus! by Douglas Coupland
Alright. This book isn’t for anyone wanting a jolly little romp through a light text. Coupland writes funny books, (jPod, Microserfs, etc) but this is more of a commentary on American society through a dark lens of a school shooting. If that doesn’t make you want to read it, I don’t know what will.
But really, after finishing this book, I suddenly felt enlightened about what was important in my life. I think it’s one of those rare works that can inspire change in people.
The Boleyn Inheritance by Philippa Gregory
If someone went up to me and said, “You should read a historical fiction novel set in the 16th century,” I’d go “Ummm no thank you.” But I’m going to say that to you right now. Gregory takes the story of Henry VIII and his wives, and creates a great fiction novel. I’ve become interested in European history thanks to this book (one of many in the series). I wish I was this interested when I actually studied European history in school.
The Lovely Bones- Alice Sebold
This book doesn’t need me to plug it… not when Peter Jackson directed the movie based on it. I read The Lovely Bones last year, but I feel it’s pertinent since the movie just came out.
Sure, the plot is sad. But I think that the message of the book is an uplifting one. I say read it!
Song of Solomon- Toni Morrison
I read this in an English class this year. Wow is all I have to say. Morrison is also the author of Beloved, but I much prefer Song of Solomon. I could read it hundreds of times and still find new meaning in it. Keep a highlighter and pen with you at all times in case you need to annotate all the metaphors and brilliance.
It must be awesome to be Morrison and be able to write such a beautiful book. A++++
Thirteen Reasons Why- Jay Asher
You’ve probably seen ads for Jay Asher’s debut novel. The campaign is really interesting… there are multiple 30 second TV spots that show only a tape player and a girl’s voice saying something mysterious about why she killed herself. I was intrigued enough to go buy the book (in hardcover O.o) and find out what was up.
I’m so glad I did, because this was (obviously) one of my favorite five books of the year. The concept is just really interesting and told in a very real way. I felt like I was also listening to the tapes. You’ll understand if you read it.
So that’s it! Do you agree on my choices? What were your favorite books of 2009?
